Ensemble el Contratiempo from Caracas, Venezuela, play traditional
folkloric music. The trio features Angel Tolosa on the "arpa llanera"
(harp of the plains), accompanied by bass and cuatro (small folkloric
guitar). Ensemble El Contratiempo draw inspiration
from the folkloric traditions of their land, yet take the music in new
and exciting ways through the realms of jazz, bossa nova and other world
musical styles. Don't miss this great trio in concert. Performing on
traditionally 'classical' instruments, StringQuake,
takes their instruments in new directions. Amelia Romano on electric
lever harp and Misha Khalikulov on carbon fiber cello, experiment with
unusual keys, fiery time signatures, and improvisation to create a sound
uniquely their own.
After the excitement of creating and
performing a program of newly commissioned works based on the theme of
"Neighborhoods of San Francisco" between 2010-2011, the Bernal Hill
Players are now turning to the theme of
"Neighborhoods of Mexico City". For their 2012-2013 season they will be joined by guest cellist Jessica Ivry in
presenting two world premieres based on this theme, by
prominent Mexican composers Eduardo Gamboa and
Guillermo Galindo.
If gender is a kind
of doing is an annual show for the Mission Cultural Center for Latino
Arts, and, historically, a Latina-only show. This fact complicates the
bodies that are on display because many of them
represent the female form outside racial definitions of the "Latina,"
challenging notions of what is exotic and what is "normal."
Artists: Regina José
Galindo, Deborah Roberts, Elizabeth "Oscar" Maynard, Rye Purvis, Laura
Lucía Sanz, Lorraine García-Nakata, Ana Teresa Fernandez.
This exhibit privileges
formal achievement in visual art, showcasing expertise and training in
visual fields; but it also asks "if gender is a kind of doing, an
incessant activity performed in part, without one's
knowing and without one's willing?" (Butler 2004, 35).
ABC7 News, Programming, and Public
Affairs Departments will be in San Francisco's Mission District to meet
with local MCCLA supporters. Our goal is to hear from you about local
issues and stories that affect your community.
Information will be available on how to access the television station
for news stories, promoting non-profit events and job opportunities.
